The young Lady Kats cross country team ran in the Northwestern Combo on a hot and humid Wednesday evening. The Lady Kats gained valuable experience as this was the first cross country meet of the season finishing sixthout of seventeams; this race was 3K in length and a nice way to get ready for the competitive season to come.

Kokomo’s top finisher was sophomore Julynne Spidell with a time of 11:21 finishing in firstplace. Julynne has not been feeling well over the last few days and it was nice to see her go out there and compete to win the 1 & 2 race.I couldn’t be prouder of the way that she raced; she laid back the first mile, really pushed the pace over the next 800 meters to open up a gap, and then raced to her firstplace finish. It was nice to see her push through some discomfort and take the victory. I am looking forward to seeing her run at the 5k distance.

We had two other standout performances. Junior Jaylee Copeland had a terrific effort finishing 11thin the 1 & 2 race; if she continues to stay focused and dedicated, she might have a chance to advance to the regional meet individually.

Freshman Kaileigh Jones also had an outstanding race finishing 15thin the 5, 6, 7+ race with a time of 16:28. Kaileigh grinded through a few tough portions of the race and put herself in position to pass a few girls over the last 400 meters for a strong finish to her first high school race.

The remaining finishers in the 3 & 4 race for Kokomo were Kylie Lewis in 12thwith a time of 17:15 and Emma Nelson in 14thwith a time of 17:58. In the 5, 6, 7+ race, Eva Gonzales finished in 20thplace with a time of 17:43, Gadea Castano in 25thplace with a time of 18:38, and Tamily Baroni in 28thplace with a time of 19:04.
