The Wildkats played in the North Central Conference Boys Soccer Tournament at Harrison High School Saturday, looking for their first victory of the season against the Richmond Red Devils.
After a scoreless first half which was balanced between both terms in terms of possession, the Wildkats’ junior midfielder Micah Lamberson scored the go ahead goal off an assist from senior forward Paul Colmonares, Jr. to put the Wildkats up 1-0, a lead they would hold for the next few minutes.
When Richmond capitalized on an opportunity with ten minutes left in the match, the Wildkats found themselves in familiar territory. The game would end knotted at 1-1.
After a scoreless overtime session, the teams switched sides of the field, and with a few minutes remaining, Lamberson again found the back of the net, giving the Kats the lead and ultimately their first victory of the season, 2-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joey McConnell recorded 12 saves in the match. The man of the match was Lamberson.
In the second match of the day, the Wildkats played the 16th- ranked Harrison Raiders with a chance to advance to the semi-finals of the conference tournament. It was not to be.
The Raiders’ fresh legs showed as they scored within the first two minutes of the match and built a 4-0 halftime lead. The Raiders tacked on two more goals after the break and moved on to play in the conference semi-finals next weekend.
The Wildkats (1-9-0, 1-6-0) will play the Marion Giants next Saturday at Harrison High School at noon.
McConnell recorded 11 saves and was the man of the match.
