The Kokomo Wildkats beat conference rival Logansport, 53-48 in their opening round game of the IHSAA Sectional Tournament on Tuesday night at Marion. The win improved the Wildkats to 7-16 on the season.
Torian Smith was the player of the game for the Wildkats with his hustle and willingness to accept a role and play it to the “T”. R.J. Oglesby led the Kats in scoring with 19, going 10 for 12 from the free throw line. But it was Smith that seemed to be everywhere for the Kats in the win. Smith finished the night with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a team high three steals.
Senior Jackson Richards also had an awesome game. While Jackson was the focus of the Berries defense, he did not force things and made plays all night for his teammates. On top pf this, Jackson played a heck of a game on Logansport leading scorer, Malachi Pearson, limiting him to 5-for-15 from the field.
It was nice to see the Kats play FOR each other and not worry about things that are out of our control. We can be a truly dangerous team when we focus on winning the game and not who is going to get credit for it. The Kokomo Wildkats played really well last night, and THAT is why we are advancing to the sectional semifinals to battle NCC rival, McCutcheon. McCutcheon is currently ranked #9 in the state and WE LET THEM OFF THE HOOK in an overtime loss earlier this year. We will need Wildkat Nation at Marion High School on Friday in LARGE NUMBERS and ready to root on your Kats. See you Friday!
