The Wildkats closed out the season by competing in the IHSAA State Tournament at McCutcheon High School in sectional play.
The Wildkats played the Harrison Raiders for a third time this season, and the 17th-ranked Raiders once again were victorious over the Wildkats. Though the Wildkats battled and kept it close, the Raiders’ depth proved to be too much.
Defending for much of the first half, Kokomo frustrated the Raiders until they scored a PK to take a 1-0 halftime lead. After the break, Kokomo (1-12-0, 1-8-0) conceded a second and third goal to go down 3-0 at which point the Kats changed their tactical approach and tried to push numbers forward which ultimately left the defensive third more exposed. Sophomore goalkeeper Joey McConnell recorded 18 saves on the night, bringing his season total to 186.
The final score, 5-0, does not reflect how well the team played until late in the second half.
The Wildkats’ man of the match was senior center back and team captain Bryan Stoltzfus.
