Lady Kats Battle Hard Against Northwestern

By Elizabeth Rayl | Aug 29, 2025 5:24 AM

The Lady Kats traveled to face the Northwestern Tigers on Thursday night in what proved to be a strong and competitive matchup. The game opened with an even exchange of play, as both teams fought to establish momentum. The Tigers pressured early with several shots on goal, but senior goalkeeper Aiyona Cox stood tall, making a series of incredible saves to keep the Kats in the match. Midway through the first half, Kokomo began to create chances of their own. A corner kick nearly turned into the first goal of the night, but the ball curved just outside the line and was called back. Despite the Kats’ efforts, Northwestern broke through late in the half, scoring twice to take a 2–0 lead into halftime. Determined not to back down, the Lady Kats came out strong in the second half, keeping much of the play in the midfield and working hard to connect passes. Cox continued her stellar night in goal, but the Tigers’ attack managed to find the net three more times. Even with time running down, Kokomo refused to quit. With ten minutes remaining, the Kats’ persistence paid off when they earned a penalty kick. Mattie Rayl calmly buried it, giving the Lady Kats their lone goal of the night. While the 5–1 score favored Northwestern, Kokomo showed tremendous grit, composure, and teamwork throughout the match. Cox was named Player of the Game for her agility and determination in goal, while defender Izzy Riggs stood out as a force in the back line. The Lady Kats continue to grow with each outing, building chemistry and confidence. They’ll look to carry that fight into their next match on Tuesday, September 2, when they travel to face Lafayette Jefferson.
