The Kokomo Wildkats (12-3-1, 5-0-0) concluded their season, falling to the McCutcheon Mavericks by a score of 5-0, ending their playoff hopes and most recent unbeaten streak of six matches. In a tough sectional field where four of the six teams won at least 10 matches this fall, we knew we had our work cut out for us. In an uncharacteristic match, the Wildkats failed to slow down the Maverick attack and did not deal with the pressure applied by the hosts in the first round of sectional play hosted at Harrison High School. The Kats conceded in the fourth minute of play, but regrouped to solidly defend the Maverick attack for much of the first half. At halftime, the Kats were down only 1-0, but had generated little offense of their own. In the second half, the Kats created two good opportunities in the first four minutes, but both of junior striker Arthur Barbosa’s shots were either directly at the keeper or wide of the goal. After conceding a second goal 14 minutes into the second half and a third 15 minutes later, the Kats created a few more good chances. Senior winger Javier Carrera’s header a few yards from goal off of senior captain Ben Herrera’s cross did not hit the frame of the goal, and at that moment, down 3-0, the Kats started pushing numbers forward. McCutcheon took advantage of this tactic and notched two more goals in the final seven minutes to conclude the scoring and seal the win. It was an unfortunate night for Kokomo as this was the only match this season in which the Kats were shut out on the scoreboard. Wildkat keeper Alan Lopez recorded seven saves in the final match of the season. Your men of the match are senior midfielder and captain Benjamin Herrera and senior winger Javier Carrera. Although they were knocked out of the state tournament in round one, the Wildkats conclude the season as undefeated North Central Conference Champions.
