Wildkats Extend Win Streak, Defeat Golden Eagles 3-1

By Aaron Blessing | Sep 1, 2024 12:00 AM

The Kokomo Wildkats hosted non conference foe Oak Hill and defeated the visitors 3-1 Saturday to extend their win streak to three games. In a direct, physical match, neither team was able to control the game and capitalize on the scoring chances created until the second half. In the second half, Kokomo created a few nifty combinations which led to the first two goals of the game. With 24 minutes left in the match, senior Henrique Alvaregna De Oliveira won the ball from an Oak Hill defender and passed to senior Javier Carrera. Carrera spun away from his mark and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the Oak Hill goal for a 1-0 lead. It was a fabulous finish! The Wildkats did struggle with Oak Hill’s direct attack at times, and three minutes later, the Oak Hill center forward headed the ball over the Wildkat center back and goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. Eight minutes later, senior captain Ben Herrera beat his mark on the right flank and crossed the ball into the box. Carrera’s header was saved by the Oak Hill goalkeeper, but Alvarenga De Oliveira’s follow up shot made it 2-1. Herrera’s penetrating runs from the right flank caused problems for Oak Hill in the second half. After Oak Hill missed a penalty kick, junior Arthur Barbosa beat his mark on the left side of penalty area, and was fouled dribbling at the goal. He knocked home the final goal from the penalty spot for a final scoreline of 3-1 with under three minutes to play. Wildkat junior keeper Alan Lopez recorded two saves. On the season, Carrera (6 goals, 1 assist) and Barbosa (5 goals, 1 assist) lead the team in goal scoring, and Alvaregna De Oliveira notched his third goal of the season. Carrera has scored in each match this season. The Wildkats (4-1-0, 1-0-0) visit non-conference foe Park Tudor Tuesday evening. Your man of the match is senior Javier Carrera. Junior Varsity The junior varsity team (1-1-1, 1-0-0) dropped its first match of the season, losing to the Golden Eagles 3-1. Sophomores Ethan Landrum and KJ Lorenz played well in goal, but the Wildkats conceded a penalty in the first half and two second half goals. Sophomore Gael Cordero scored a nifty goal from the right side of the box with the outside of his right foot to curl the ball away from the goalkeeper to tie it up 1-1 late in the second half, but Golden Eagles scored the final two goals of the afternoon.
