The Kokomo Wildkats followed their season-opening victory with a defeat at the hands of the Maconaquah Braves, falling 3-2 at the Braves’ field. The Wildkats controlled the tempo and possession early, and held the Brave attack in check for most of the first half, allowing only one shot and shutting them out on the scoreboard. In the seventh minute, senior winger Gui Baldinu switched play to senior winger Javier Carrera who finished near the top of the box for a 1-0 lead. The Wildkats dominated possession, but shot poorly and held only a 1-0 lead going into halftime. At the start of the second half, the Kats again dominated possession and shots, and senior captain Ben Herrera’s goal served to put the Kats up 2-0. When a third goal by the Kats was disallowed by an offsides call, the Braves started to mount a comeback. With 13 minutes left, the Braves scored two goals 18 seconds apart to equalize, and with 8 minutes left, the Kats failed to mark up on runners in the box on a Brave corner kick, and they scored the rebound, making it 3-2 and sending the Kats to their first defeat of the season. Kokomo outshot Maconaquah 27 to 7, but failed to test the keeper most of the night. The Wildkats (1-1-0, 0-0-0) will have to rebound quickly as they host county rival Northwestern Thursday and travel to Muncie Central to open conference play Saturday.
