Unified Kats Earn Their State Moment

By Mike Wilson | May 31, 2026 4:01 PM

This one was different. After three years of near misses, setbacks, and one painful one-point miss last season, the Unified Kats broke through at Regionals. Kokomo finished third with 115 points, earning a trip to the State finals in a meet that stayed tight from the first field event until the boys 4x100 crossed the finish line in the final event. Pendleton Heights finished first with 125 points, Fishers was second with 118, and the Unified Kats were right there all day. For a program that has been trying to get through this meet for three years, it meant everything. There have been seasons where things outside of our control kept us from even getting out of Sectionals. We fought through that. Last year, we came within one point of making it to State. That one hurt. And it stayed with us. This year, we made it. The biggest reason we stayed in contention was simple: our team kept delivering. Across relays, field events, and running events, we had 11 PRs or season bests. Every time the meet gave us a chance to gain ground, somebody stepped up. We did not tell the team where we stood. We knew how quickly things could change, and we wanted them focused on what they could control. Their job was to compete in one event at a time, trust their preparation, and be ready when their moment came. They did exactly that. Field Events Set the Tone The meet started in the field, and that is where the Unified Kats gave themselves a chance right away. In long jump, freshman Aaron Cruz saved his best jump of the tournament for Regionals, winning his flight with a jump of 11-10.50. Senior Ellie Neuhauser finished right behind him in second with a jump of 11-09.00. Together, they brought in 18 points when every point mattered. Izzy Sargent and Addi Cline kept that momentum going with personal-best jumps of 8-11.75 and 11-02.00. Their second- and third-place finishes added 14 more points, giving the Unified Kats another huge lift before the running events even began. In shot put, freshman Kendall Novinger had another outstanding performance, throwing almost a two-foot PR with a mark of 24-01.25 to finish fifth in her flight. She finished just behind senior Ethan Lee, who placed fourth in the flight with a personal-best throw of 25-06.50. Together, Kendall and Ethan pulled in 9 points for the team. Seniors Clarie Rowe and Austin Jewell added 4 more points with a fourth-place finishes in their flights. Before the Unified Kats ever got to the track events, the field event athletes had already made it clear that this team was not going away. The 100 Meters Kept Us Moving The 100 meters turned into a major event for the Unified Kats. Freshman Kalynn Williams ran a PR and won her race with a time of 19.30. Addi Driver ran her best race of the season and placed fourth with a time of 17.68. Seniors Brooklyn Smith and Donovan Davis both ran personal bests, with Brooklyn finishing in 16.20 and Donovan in 14.15. Those four performances brought in 23 points and gave us another big push in the team race. Different athletes. Different heats. Same response. Step up when the team needs you. The 400 Meters Added Another Push The 400 meters became another big scoring event for us. Freshman Aaron Cruz came back after long jump and beat his personal best in the 400 with a 1:12.94, finishing second in his heat. Joseph Randolph and senior Ethan Lytle also delivered, finishing third and fifth in their heat. Then came one of the biggest moments of the day. In the fastest heat, Carter McClain had 200 meters left and was sitting in sixth place. He didn’t panic. He didn’t fade. He just kept working. One runner at a time, Carter started moving up. By the time he hit the finish line, he had gone all the way from sixth to second. He crossed in 54.93, just .24 seconds off the win, and helped the 400 group bring in 26 points for the team. In a meet that close, that mattered. The Girls Relay Adds Another Record The girls 4x100 added another highlight for the Kats. The all-senior relay team of Brooklyn Smith, Maddie Armstrong, Macy Rakestraw, and Ellie Neuhauser finished second and broke the Unified Kats team record one more time together. Macy, who was out with an injury last week, stepped back in and helped the group deliver when we needed it. That is what seniors do. They show up for each other. The Boys Relay Brings It Home The boys 4x100 was the final event of the meet, and the Unified Kats were ready for the moment. Seniors Joshua Smith and Austin Jewell, along with Hayden Humbarger and Hutch Munsey, had worked all week on handoffs, and it showed. They moved the baton smoothly around the track, ran a season PR, and pulled away from Lafayette Jeff to earn a well-deserved second-place finish. From the first field event to the final relay, the Unified Kats kept answering. Going to State, Together At the end of the meet, we reminded them that this was bigger than the athletes on the Regional roster. It belonged to every teammate who pushed someone at practice, every teammate who competed beside them at meets, every teammate who cheered from the fence, and every teammate who helped this group work harder and get better for each other. That is what made this Regional special. Last Stop: State
