The Oak Hill Golden Eagles opened the season with a four match unbeaten streak, but the Kokomo Wildkats ended that streak Saturday with a 3-2 victory on the road. The Wildkats were under heavy pressure from the start, as Oak Hill controlled the possession and tempo of the game. After a foul in the 11th minute, a Wildkat free kick served into the goal area resulted in a foul on Kokomo’s Sr. forward, Flory Bidunga. Bidunga cooly and calmly finished the PK for a 1-0 lead over the hosts. As the Wildkats tightened the pressure on the Golden Eagles, they started to recover the ball in front of the Oak Hill goal. In the 17th minute of play, Jr. midfielder and team captain Ben Herrera penetrated the left side of the Oak Hill defense and crossed to Bidunga who tucked in the serve for his second goal of the day and a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back, however, scoring on a breakaway with just under two minutes left in the half to make it 2-1 at halftime. After the break, Bidnuga and Herrera connected again, this time with Bidunga setting up Herrera with a wall pass combination. Herrera notched his first goal of the season for a 3-1 lead in the sixth minute of the second half. With 14 minutes left in the match, however, Oak Hill broke through the Wildkat defense and cut the lead to 3-2. The Wildkats hung on to preserve the lead and take the victory. Senior captain AJ Blessing, junior forward Javier Carrera, freshman outside back Augie Gruber, and freshman goalkeeper Ethan Landrum came up big all afternoon! Senior forward Flory Bidunga has now scored or assisted goals in three of the four matches he has played. Your man of match is junior midfielder and team captain Ben Herrera who notched one goal and one assist. The Wildkats will travel to West Lafayette Tuesday to take on the 2A #7 ranked Red Devils before hosting the unbeaten Hamilton Heights Huskies on Thursday.
